Chapter 1: The Monkey King is born.

The song was being sung by a young man chopping wood in the forest. From the young man, the Monkey King learned that the mountain was named Lingtai Fangcun Mountain. Roughly seven or eight miles from their location, there was a cave called Slanting Moon and Three Stars. Inside the cave resided an immortal known as the Bodhi Patriarch.

Bidding farewell to the wood-chopping youth and leaving the forest behind, the Monkey King traveled over a hill. Soon, he caught sight of the cave dwelling from afar. Its entrance was firmly shut. Opposite the cave, a huge stone stele stood on a hill. Approximately thirty feet tall and eight feet wide, ten large characters were inscribed upon it: "Lingtai Fangcun Mountain, Slanting Moon and Three Stars Cave." As he observed, the cave's door suddenly opened, and out came a young immortal boy.

The Handsome Monkey King quickly walked up and bowed deeply, explaining his intention. The fairy boy said: “My master was just about to preach, when he suddenly told me to come out and open the door. He said there was someone outside who wanted to learn from him. So it’s you! Come with me!” The Handsome Monkey King quickly tidied up his clothes and followed the fairy boy into the cave, and came to the platform where the Patriarch preached.

The Monkey King saw Bodhi Patriarch sitting upright on the platform, with more than thirty fairy boys standing on both sides of the platform. He quickly knelt down and kowtowed. The Patriarch asked him about his purpose and was very happy. Seeing that he had no name, he said: “You shall be called Wukong!”
