Tang Monk learned the Tightening Hoop Spell, bowed his head and thanked the old woman. At this time, the old woman had turned into a golden light and flew eastward. Tang Monk looked up and saw that it was Guanyin Bodhisattva. He quickly knelt down and kowtowed, then put the clothing and hat into his bundle, sat by the roadside, and recited the Tightening Hoop Spell over and over until he memorized it thoroughly.
Guanyin Bodhisattva rode on auspicious clouds and didn’t go far before she met Sun Wukong who came from the east. Sun Wukong had left Tang Monk and had a meal at the Dragon King of the East Sea. Under the Dragon King’s earnest persuasion, he had changed his mind. Guanyin Bodhisattva told him to hurry back to Tang Monk ’s side. Sun Wukong didn’t say anything else, bid farewell to Guanyin Bodhisattva and went to catch up with Tang Monk.
Seeing Tang Monk, Sun Wukong told him about his meal at the Dragon King’s place and asked, “Master, are you hungry too? I’ll go get some vegetarian food for you.” Tang Monk shook his head and said, “No need, there’s still some dry food in the bundle. You get it for me.” Sun Wukong opened the bundle and found that the clothing and hat given by Guanyin Bodhisattva were very beautiful, so he asked Tang Monk for them.
Tang Monk nodded in agreement. Wukong, elated, put on the clothes and hat in a jiffy.
Wanting to test the efficacy of the Tightening Hoop Spell, Tang Monk started chanting it softly. Instantly, Wukong felt excruciating pain and started rolling on the ground. He tried desperately to remove the hat, but it was as if it had grown into his flesh; he couldn't take it off nor tear it apart.
