Chapter 10: Zhu Bajie’s Failed Marriage with the Four Bodhisattvas

They did not walk for long, and the sky gradually darkened. In a small grove not far away, they could vaguely see a luxurious gatehouse. Tang Monk said happily: “We have a place to stay tonight.” As soon as Tang Monk and his disciples arrived at the door, a middle-aged woman came out of the house. Tang Monk quickly greeted her and explained their purpose. The woman invited Tang Monk and his disciples into the house to rest.

The woman led Tang Monk and his disciples to the hall, ordered the servants to prepare vegetarian meals, and chatted with Tang Monk: “My family has a fortune of ten thousand taels, and a thousand acres of fertile land. Alas! My husband died two years ago, and I only have three daughters to accompany me. You four are all gentlemen, why don’t you marry my daughters and become my sons-in-law? What do you think, master?”

Tang Monk’s face turned red to the ears, and he pretended not to hear, and did not answer. Bajie heard that there were so many properties and beautiful women, and he was tempted. He quietly leaned over to his master and asked him to agree. Tang Monk glared at Bajie fiercely and scolded him. Bajie pouted and stood aside.

The woman saw that Tang Monk did not agree, and was very unhappy. Tang Monk saw this and pushed it to Wukong. Wukong pushed it to Bajie. Bajie was willing in his heart, but he also pretended to decline. The woman saw that they pushed each other and none of them agreed. She got angry and walked behind the screen, closed the door and left.
